Tier III or the tertiary level supports are for 1-5% of students exhibiting very serious behaviors requiring more intensive and individualized supports. Tier III supports are intended to reduce the frequency, duration, and intensity of externalizing/internalizing problem behaviors and to improve the student’s overall quality of life using person-centered plans such as wraparound.
Tier III Student Support Teams use intensive evidence-based intervention strategies, such as function-based behavioral assessments and behavior support plans. Procedures for frequent monitoring, evaluating and reassessing of the student individual support plan is part of the evaluation system. Tier III prevention is most effective when Tier I and Tier II supports are in place and implemented with fidelity to the national PBIS model.
